GREEK AND LATIN LITERARY SOURCES FOR THE HISTORY
OF THE WESTERN BALKANS AND SOUTHEASTERN ALPINE REGION

1. - The project
Originally conceived by Jaroslav SaSel (nota 1), the project is in course at the Institute of Archaeology of the Scientific Research Centre at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU). It lacked collaborators thus merely minor contributions by J. SaSel , as well as my book on Cassius Dio and Herodian, were published (nota 2).
2. - Appian and Illyricum
Since 1995, the research project titled "Appian and Illyricum" is officially registered at the Ministry of Sciences as one of the Institute's major projects; it should be concluded by 2002 at the latest. The expected results are an introductive study of Appian, his life, career, and literary work, an evaluation of his sources, his method of writing and his impact upon later writers. A new version of the Greek text of IllyrikÈ is being prepared (manuscripts compared by Kai Brodersen), as well as a new English translation, differing in details from that of H. White (nota 3).
The main part of the book will contain an historical-archaeological commentary, divided in several chapters, following the structure of Appian's book (his Illyriké is actually an appendix to the Macedonian book). The starting point for the new com-mentary will be the commentary published by J. Dobias (nota 4), by now in several ways obsolete. Many very important short contributions and monographs have appeared on Appian in the past sixty years, which have considerably changed the hitherto valid views on the author and his work. Also, much new archaeological material is available providing additional evidence to better illuminate Appian's narrative.
