The second annual Trieste Joyce School University of Trieste, 21-27 June 1998
Director: Professor Renzo S. Crivelli Programme Director: Dr John Mc Court |
In the light of Joyce's
long and rich Triestine sojourn, it is entirely fitting that Trieste is home, for the
second consecutive year, to the Trieste Joyce school following on the success of the
1997 event, which was graced by distinguished speakers including Rosa Maria Bosinelli
(University of Bologna), Bruce Bradley S.J. (Clongowes Wood College), Nick Carter
(University of Trieste), Corinna del Greco Lobner (University of Tulsa), Tim Martin
(Rutgers University of New Jersey), Barbara Arnett Melchiori (University of Rome III),
Giorgio Melchiori (University of Rome III), Ken Monaghan (James Joyce Cultural
Center, Dublin), Laura Pelaschiar (University of Udine/Bottega Joyce), Fritz Senn (Zurich
James Joyce Foundation), John Wyse Jackson (London) and Colm Tibin (Dublin) as well as
50 participants from 11 different countries.
The school aims to satisfy the needs both of seasoned Joyceans and newcomers to the world
of Joyce. As it takes place in Trieste, which Joyce termed "my second country",
we will attempt to use the city itself - its history, its culture, its languages, - as an
inspiration for our studies.
Events will begin with a
reception on the evening of Sunday 21st June and conclude with a farewell dinner on
Saturday 27th June. Each morning there will be two or three lectures. Among the featured
topics will be "Joyce's Triestine friends", "Joyce and Pound",
"Joyce and the Austro-Hungarian Empire", and "Joyce's writings in 'Il
Piccolo della Sera'".
In the afternoons we will organise three week-long seminars on Dubliners, Ulysses,
andJoyce's Triestine writings. The first will be given by Weldon Thornton and Timothy
Martin, the
second by Terence Killeen and Fritz Senn, the third by Kevin Barry and John McCourt. There
will also be walking tours of Joyce's Trieste and visits to places of Joycean interest,
such as
the Greek Orthodox Church, the Jewish Synagogue, the Teatro Verdi, the music museum, and
the Caff San Marco.
Among the planned
highlights of the social programme are a visit to an Osmiza in the Triestine Carso, a
night at the operetta at the Teatro Verdi, a visit to the "Luci e Suoni" show at
the
Castello di Miramare - once summer home of the Hapsburgs, an evening of music and song, a
special reading by the Irish poet, Paula Meehan, and a farewell dinner.
