Description of Events |
Now in its
seventh consecutive year, the Trieste Joyce School aims to satisfy the needs
both of seasoned Joyceans and of newcomers to the world of Joyce studies. It
takes place in the city Joyce termed "my second country" and draws
inspiration from Trieste itself - its history, its culture, its architecture,
its institutions.
The Trieste
Joyce School has developed a considerable reputation among Joyceans and has
attracted students from over twenty different countries and long list of
distinguished scholars and writers.
The school
opens on the evening of Sunday 29 June in the auditorium of the Galleria d'Arte moderna "Revoltella" and
concludes with a farewell dinner the following Saturday. A wide range of
critical approaches is encouraged and each morning there are two or three
lectures followed by week-long afternoon seminars on Joyce and the contemporary
Irish novel (Eamonn Hughes), Ulysses (Fritz Senn), Joyces Triestine
Writings (Erik Schneider), and Finnegans Wake (Ron Ewart). Walking tours
to see key spots in Joyce's Trieste such as the Greek Orthodox Church, the
Jewish Synagogue, the Teatro Verdi, the Museo Joyce and the Museo Svevo, and
the Caff San Marco are also arranged.
Among the planned
highlights of the evening social programme are a visit to an Osmiza in
the Triestine Carso, a visit to Miramare Castle - once summer home of the
Hapsburgs, an evening of music and song, an afternoon on the beach, and a
special reading by the acclaimed Irish novelist, John Banville.
