WEEK 6
- Discussion of the previous week's assignment: Thomason and
Kaufman (1988: 3.1).
- The intended audience of Thomason and Kaufman:
- use of technical terms without any explanatory note;
- reference to literature assumed to be familiar to the reader.
- Thomason and Kaufman's purpose: to lay out a background framework
of foundational notions. Core notions presented in Thomason and Kaufman
(1988: 3.1):
- BORROWING
- SUBSTRATUM INTERFERENCE (or INTERFERENCE DUE TO LANGUAGE SHIFT)
- Rigorous definitions as heuristic tools.
ASSIGNMENT:
Compare the sociolinguistic scenarios presented in Milroy (1984), Lutz
(2009) and Emonds & Faarlund (2014) (NOTE: they may be presented is
portions of the texts you have not read yet).
Focus in particular:
on the emiprical evidence the authors
provide to support their scenarios;
on previous literature the authors provide to support their scenarios;
on how the proposed scenarios are / can be analyzed in terms of
Thomason and Kaufman
(1988: 3.1).
