- Introduction to the 'Celtic Hypothesis': the 'traditional'
representation of the fate of the Celtic population after the arrival
of the Germanic settlers (Bede's
version is available here)
and alternative scenarios.
- The notions of substratum
and superstratum and
different situations of language contact.
- The morphosyntactic features of English that may be due to
contact with the Celts. The slides
presented in class are available here.
ASSIGNMENT:
Read
the
paper
downloadable here, limited to pages 5-14, 22-26, 29(bottom half)-30.
Single out the passages that present:
1) known facts that represent common knowledge;
2) the author's proposal;
3) known or novel facts that support the author's proposal.
