- Discussion of last week's assignment: comparison of three reviews
of Emonds
& Faarlund's proposal.
- The tone and structure of a well-written review (as opposed to
sloppy disparagement).
- The reviewer's capital sin: inaccurate presentation of the
proposals under review (and criticism thereof).
- More on OV and VO orders in the history of English: what
one can infer from the data, and what one can NOT infer from them.
ASSIGNMENT:
Emonds
& Faarlund's proposal received some attention in the general press.
Search the web for presentations of their hypothesis aimed at the
general public (try to find as many as possible), and compare them with
the reviews we have examined.
